Deseret Industries Provides with Opportunities for New Life

Deseret Industries is a world-known non-profit organization, which works as a subdivision of the Welfare Services of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The organization has three parts:

• Trainees work, long-term employment;
• Inexpensive purchase, quality merchandise in safe and clean retail environment;
• The provision of service through donation.

Foundation and Location

The organization was founded in 1938. At first it was a thrift store, but today it is a chain of such stores. Its 46 stores are located in western states, such as Nevada, Arizona, Utah, California, Washington, Idaho and Oregon. The stores are very similar to Goodwill Industries. As with Goodwill stores, people donate the things they don’t use. These can be appliances and furniture, clothing and computers. Deseret Industries support people, who are characterized by slight deviation – emotional, physical or social.

Deviance definition. Deviation is a difference from the norm, which is accepted as a standard of a certain society. The deviance of people reflects in their attitudes and behavior. They are usually neglected and need help and support. Deseret provides skill training for such people and helps to find job, placing them into a private sector. These jobs are considered to be a rehabilitative training, not a career. That’s the reason they don’t last more than a year, but they help people start believing in their skills. Deviance definition always frightens those, who aren’t ready to accept such people, but Deseret organization always provides them with goods at low costs. In such stores they can get lots of items.

Training

Learning new skills from associates of the Deseret organization, they really support their families and earn some money. There are associates for elderly and disabilities. It is really hard to find jobs for such people, but the organization encourages the trainees to be self-reliant and enter the job market. The organization’s slogan “People Helping People Help Themselves” always works.
The trainees are not everything the Deseret offers. Today there are fulltime stuff including Retail Processing Coordinator, Development Specialist, Sore Manager and Job Coach Trainer.

Humanitarian Efforts

The organization is characterized by its humanitarian programs. Donated goods can be given to community people upon the local bishop’s recommendations. In the event of flood, fire or any other disaster, Deseret sends the items to the countries that are in need of humanitarian help. The organization also sends money using remittance. Remittance (definition) is the process of sending money to remove an obligation. Remittance can be done through wire transfer, electronic network or mail. Today they support LDS Church Welfare Services organizations. Remittance (definition) is also referred to a certain amount of money that is sent to remove this obligation.
Trainers of Deseret Industries never receive medical coverage, retirement, sick leave, vacation or other benefits. They explain that this s the case because they have to prepare encourage and prepare people for work in the community.
